UPDATE: 5:44 PM: Iranian state TV has confirmed that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is dead.

The news comes hours after Donald Trump proclaimed the harsh 37-year rule of the cleric had ended with the US and Israeli attack on Iran. With dozens of other members of the Iranian leadership also dead, Khamenei was said to have died in his official office in the early hours of the first wave of attacks on Iran by US and Israeli air forces.

“The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution was martyred at their workplace in the Leader’s Residence,” official Iranian media said and tweeted just minutes ago.. “At the moment of martyrdom, they were carrying out their assigned duties and present at their workplace (their office), and this cowardly attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning.”
