No Man’s Sky Remnant, the Furnace, and the Final Colossus Upgrades

I kind of got the bit between my teeth on the Remnant update.  While it wasn’t as game changing as Voyagers and the introduction of corvettes or even as terrain changing as the two Worlds updates, it did give me some goals to work on.

Welcome to Remnant

Having finished the expedition, I came back to my main save looking to finished up collecting all of the options for the Colossus exocraft.  Primarily I wanted the furnace chassis, which I believed would solve the whole need to haul waste all over the planet.

I had seen a few suggestions as to what would unlock the furnace, but none of them had yet proven correct.  So I carried on with the hauling and disposal routine, with the first item I unlocked being the off road wheels, which hit at 75 normal scrap disposed of.

Off road wheels unlocked

Not my main goal, but one of the four remaining running gear options, so a step ahead.

Shortly after that I managed to unlock the weathered finish, which requires that you smash through an unspecified number of objects with the dozer blade.

The weathered finish unlocked

Given how I drive, which without a load tends to be straight through things, that unlock was going to land sooner or later.

But still not the furnace.

One of the suggestions for the furnace unlock was that it would hit when you had earned ~2,500 nanites from disposing of regular scrap.  So I focused on that a bit, which was easy enough because all of the disposal facilities have a bunch of normal scrap sitting around.

Tossing scrap into the disposal unit

As with the expedition, you do appear to have to toss things into the incinerator yourself.  Using the auto-collect does not increment you.  Do I made a point of doing all the normal scrap and loading up on extra when I had space… and that did it.  I did not clock the exact nanite amount… largely because it doesn’t give you a counter for just normal scrap… but it landed.

The furnace chassis unlocked

This was the moment I had been waiting for.   I summoned my starship and headed back to my base and the summoning bay to put the furnace on.  I set myself up in a full on garbage truck style vehicle that I could go out collecting trash on my own, without the need to haul stuff to the disposal yard.

The Green Team is go!

The Green Team is the City of San Jose waste disposal contractor, so I tried to mimic their livery a bit.  Well, I made the truck green and white.

The truck was susceptible to all of the usual Colossus problems… which mostly means falling in holes…. but at least I had the furnace now.

This again…

As somebody posted over on Reddit, the planet seems to turn into Swiss cheese when you are hauling a load.

Anyway, I now had the furnace module and my plan was set.  I was going to scan for waste sites, fly there in my starship, summon my Colossus, and just feed everything into the furnace.  That would get my the updates I needed to unlock the last three pieces, the running gear.  You need 50 of each special waste type for each.

- Tracked treads – 50 explosive waste

- Super-elastic wheels – 50 radioactive waste

- Caterpillar treads – 50 toxic waste

So off I went to a waste site, where I proceeded to stuff everything there into the furnace.

A tight fit, but I made it work

The opening on the furnace is tight enough that I ended up walking most stuff into it, which is fairly easy on flat ground.  Even that giant explosive box fit.

After I cleared out the site I checked my stats… and found out that special waste doesn’t count if you throw it in the furnace.  You need to get rid of it at a waste disposal site.

That meant going back to hauling… which also meant me picking a new planet to do this on.  As I mentioned last time, the flora on my paradise base world doesn’t get collected by the dozer blade, so sticks up into the cargo area, throwing stuff out the back as I pass over it.  That was getting on my nerves.  No amount of zig-zag driving and mining laser/flame thrower usage was cutting it.

Plant named appropriately

So I started searching for an appropriate world… and came up with a paradise moon in one of the early systems that Potshot and I explored.  It is the Jovi system, in the Euclid galaxy, and happens to have the planet where I put down a now somewhat neglected settlement.   Or did I take over management of the settlement?  I forget how you get a settlement now, but there is a teleport portal there, so I jumped in and found the system had the sort of location I was looking for.

Headed to the paradise moon of Niro Tau

This was what I wanted.  The flora and fauna were all handily scooped up by the dozer blade, sentinels were docile, the weather was nice, and the terrain was mostly undulating red grass plains, with no oceans… not that driving under water is a problem, as I learned last time.

The system coordinates if you’re dying to see it

I set about hauling and had few issues… or at least few out of the ordinary.

Arriving at the waste disposal site

It didn’t have to be a paradise planet.  Once you unlock the Colossus HVAC upgrades you are comfy in your cab no matter the weather.  But it made general visibility better.

Except at night.

The one problem I did have, which is always an issue, is falling in holes, something made much more treacherous at night.  The lighting options on the Colossus are non-existent.

BMWs on the highway have brighter lights than that

Seriously, as soon as the sun goes down… and the little moon had a day/night cycle that was getting into the Stars Reach zone of annoyance… I was practically driving blind.

So if Hello Games wants some additional ideas for exocraft options, might I suggest they look into LED light bars.

That said, I went about my hauling and only fell into a hole twice, though I pulled up just short of doing so a few times.  A lot of the time driving in the dark I was trying to decipher if a dark patch was a shadow, a color variation in the terrain, the back side of a steep slope, or another hole poised to swallow the truck whole.

I managed to unlock the tracked treads and the super elastic wheels pretty quickly, but what I really wanted was the full caterpillar treads.  Those were keyed to toxic waste, which seems to be a bit more rare than the other two types.  I went to waste sites where there would be just 2-4 toxic containers.

So as I hauled stuff back I was keeping an eye on all the little piles of waste along my route, as I would occasionally pick up an additional toxic container.

Hey, going my way toxic waste?

I also evolved my approach to incinerating the toxic waste in the giant vat.  I figured out you could stand on the edge of the vat and then just use the coil gun to pick up the waste from the truck and drop it in the vat.

The unload position I was using

It took a few more runs that I thought it would, but I hit my 50 units and the final running gear option was unlocked.  I now had caterpillar tracks, which I immediately tried out.

Now I just need a CAT trucker cap

And that kind of got me to the end of the update.  I hit my last goal and was now back to that “between expeditions” state of mind.  But I got a lot of value out of the update… certainly given the price.
