Blizzard has announced a new mobile Overwatch game called Overwatch Rush. It's a top-down reinterpretation of the hero shooter built especially for mobile players and it's in development at Blizzard, made by a team separate from the Overwatch team, Blizzard said in a blog post.
A four-minute video of the game was shared with the announcement, showing a match in action, and it's immediately apparent from it how much slower the experience is. Characters move more slowly and aiming requirements are much less strenuous on two axes rather than three. Flying still exists, just, although the impact of verticality seems significantly reduced.
Despite the MOBA-like presentation and slow gameplay speed, the essence of a hectic Overwatch team fight is still there. We see iconic original Overwatch characters such as Reinhardt, Lucio, Mercy, Reaper and Tracer fight in a battle of a very familiar shape - Reinhardt shielding, Reaper and Tracer flanking, Lucio and Mercy healing. However, some abilities have been modified to fit the new format.
Blizzard described the game's development as being "early days" still, and the only indication of a release date was word it was preparing to test Overwatch Rush in "select countries". Joining the Overwatch Discord is how to stay abreast of when test phases will launch, apparently.

It's an interesting decision to separate this announcement from the Overwatch Spotlight event at the beginning of the month, where Blizzard showcased a new expansion for the game - and a new yearly expansion plan - which has since been released and reinvigorated the game. Perhaps associations with a mobile game risked jeopardising goodwill generated by that.
Nevertheless, Overwatch is currently in a good place. As I wrote last week, this is the most excited I've been about Overwatch in 10 years.
