And I am back with the 1-15 January 2026 cyber attacks timeline. In the first timeline of January 2026, I collected 61 events (4.07 events/day) with a threat landscape dominated by malware with 36%, a direct comparison with the previous timelines is not fair, since I changed the criteria for the timeline, and the previous one dates back to more than one year ago, ahead of account takeover with 15% and ransomware, with 11%.

And I am back… I had to take a break with the timelines, due to to some different priorities, but now I have decided to kick off the new year with the old habits. However I will try to publish the timelines in a more regular fashion, and for this reason I will focus more on the quality rather than the quantity of the events. My intent is not to cover everything, but to provide an overview of the threat landscape.

That being said, in the first timeline of January 2026, I collected 61 events (4.07 events/day) with a threat landscape dominated by malware with 36%, a direct comparison with the previous timelines is not fair, since I changed the criteria for the timeline, and the previous one dates back to more than one year ago, ahead of account takeover with 15% and ransomware, with 11%.

In terms of initial access techniques, phishing was the preferred weapon with 15%, ahead of public-facing app vulnerability with 14% and social engineering with 12% (where social engineering is everything that involves luring the users with vectors different than emails).

Cyber crime led the motivations chart with 78%, ahead of cyber espionage (19%) and cyber warfare with 2% (a single event).

Public Administrations led the chart of the most targeted sectors with 14%, ahead of information and communication, finance, and education all of them with 7%.

Besides these trends, as always the timeline is rich of interesting events, such as mega breaches and attacks against organizations in the fintech space, so my final suggestion does not change: browse the timeline for the details of the events collected in this fortnight
