Sony's latest audio release, the WF-1000XM6, are flagship earbuds with improved active noise cancellation. Here's how Sony's flagship personal audio accessories compare against the AirPods Pro 3.
February saw Sony bring out an update to its upper-tier earbuds. After a three-year wait, the WF-1000XM6 are the electronic company's new best option for in-ear audio.
The WF-1000XM6, not to be confused with the similarly-named WH-1000XM6 headphones, lean on the firm's heritage of audio quality, with improvements to noise cancellation also thrown in for good measure.
These are elements that could give consumers a good reason to look at Sony's latest release when trying to decide between them and Apple's AirPods Pro 3.
Here's the tale of the tape.

AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony WF-1000XM6 - Design
The AirPods Pro 3 have the fairly standard Apple earphone design, consisting of a large section that fits inside the folds of the ear and a dangling stalk, used for control. There's a silicone tip that goes into the ear canal, which helps anchor it in place as well as seals the passage for ANC purposes.
Sony's XM6 earbuds opt for a more blob-like design that sits within the ear folds, for the most part. They do extend quite a bit out from the ear, but without any dangling elements.
Sony uses foam tips for its earbuds, though it only includes four sizes versus the five of the foam-infused versions Apple includes. The good news is the foam is able to compress, so the smallest size should still fit and be comfortable for small ears.

AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony XM6 earbuds: The cases are about the same size, though the Sony one isn't as comfortable to carry
In terms of weight, the Sony's are slightly heavier at 0.22 ounces to 0.20 ounces for the AirPods Pro 3.
One area where the Sonys do well is that they have grilles color-matched to the body, blending them in. Meanwhile Apple's black-on-white alternative stands out a lot more, so they aren't just anonymous white blobs in the ear.
The MagSafe charging case that ships with the AirPods Pro 3 is a rounded white block measuring 2.45 inches wide, 1.86 inches tall, and 0.86 inches deep. At 1.55 ounces, it's not a massive weight in your pocket.
Sony's case design is more angular, with a pill-shaped top and base and a uniform thickness. At 2.56 inches wide and 1.77 inches tall, it's wider but shorter than Apple's version by small amounts. At 1.10 inches thick, it's a bit heftier, as is its weight at 1.65 ounces.
AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony WF-1000XM6 - Control
The AirPods Pro 3 use the same controls as previous models, with the stalks being the main method of interaction.
A combination of presses and holds can be used to control media playback, answer and disconnect calls, and switch between listening modes. A swipe up and down can adjust the volume.

AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony XM6 earbuds: AirPods Pro 3 have touch-sensitive stems
There's also Siri, which you can communicate with by speaking out the trigger command. You can also take advantage of the built-in accelerometer to respond to Siri, with a nod and a shake understood as "yes" or "no" for some queries.
The XM6 earbuds mostly relies on touch controls, using touch sensors instead of buttons. The left earbud chiefly manages managing sound modes and the right dealing with playback. It also has head gesture controls, and you can also talk to Google Gemini.

AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony XM6 earbuds: The XM6 are very comfortable to wear and more subtle looking
In both instances, you can tweak the controls in software. While Apple has its settings deeply integrated into iOS and its other operating systems, Sony has to use the Sony Sound Connect app.
AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony WF-1000XM6 - Audio
Apple's AirPods Pro 3 have 10.7mm custom high-excursion drivers providing the sound, along with a custom high dynamic range driver.
By comparison, the XM6 has 8.4mm driver units in each earbud. However, while smaller, Sony does push forward on the audio quality front by promoting its use of mastering engineers to perfect the sound.
For audio processing, Apple uses its own H2 headphone chip, which has appeared previously in quite a few products. Meanwhile Sony uses the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e with an improved DAC and amplifier.

AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony XM6 earbuds: The XM6 sound amazing
In terms of what each are capable of, the XM6 has High-Resolution Audio Wireless support via its LDAC system. It also uses Edge-AI DSEE Extreme to "upscale" compressed music files in real time.
The Sony Sound Connect app also provides ways to personalize the audio, including EQ and other settings tweaks.

AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony XM6 earbuds: Sony offers a feature Apple users have been asking for โ EQ adjustments
AirPods Pro 3 also has a similar pedigree, with a new multi-port acoustic architecture with more precise airflow control. Adaptive EQ can create a sound signature customized to a user's ear geometry and fit.
When it comes to high-resolution audio, Apple does include support for Lossless Audio, using a proprietary wireless audio protocol. However, this is only available when using them with the Apple Vision Pro, not other hardware.
Both models have their own 3D audio credentials, with music seemingly moving in space to match your head movements. Apple markets it a Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, while Sony says its earbuds are 360 Reality Audio certified.
AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony WF-1000XM6 - ANC
In both cases, there is an advanced level of Active Noise Cancellation at play.
Apple's version is claimed to be able to block twice the amount of unwanted noise as the AirPods Pro 2. It uses a combination of ultra-low-noise dual-beamforming microphones as well as an inward-facing microphone to feed the ANC system processed by the H2 chip.

AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony XM6 earbuds: AirPods Pro 3 are natively integrated deep into iOS
The AirPods Pro 3 also has Transparency, a mode that filters out some of the environmental sound, but still allows you to hear important things like alarms or nearby traffic. The newest version of Transparency is more adaptive to the local environment, changing what it passes through to the user.
Conversational Awareness is also useful here, as it automatically lowers the volume of music so you can hear another person if you are in a conversation. Once the talking is over, the volume returns to its previous level.
Sony uses both its QN3e noise-cancelling chip with the V2 integrated processor to handle ANC functions. The V2 analyzes the ambient noise and fit of the earbuds, while the QN3e deals with the microphones to block out environmental sounds.
While Apple uses three microphones per earbud, Sony uses four for the same purposes. Again, there's the option to go full ANC or to let some environmental audio through, with an Adaptive NC Optimizer able to refine the noise profile in real time to match your surroundings.
There'a also an Auto Ambient Sound mode, which automatically adjusts the balance of music to environmental audio, depending on the kind of sounds in the area. The theory is that it will be more receptive to things like tannoy announcements and conversations,

A pair of "feedforward" microphones are used for picking up conversations in front of you. Dual-beamforming mics are used for picking up your voice, assisted by a bone conduction sensor.
AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony WF-1000XM6 - Connectivity and Battery Life
When it comes to connecting AirPods Pro 3 to a device, that's chiefly handled by Bluetooth 5.3. Likewise, the XM6 earbuds also rely on Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.
While you have a quick and painless pairing system in the AirPods when within the Apple ecosystem, Sony offers something similar too. There's Fast Pair support with Android devices, pop-up pairing guidance in Windows, and multi-point connection support with two devices.
For battery life, Sony says the XM6 earbuds can last for up to 8 hours of music playback with ANC on, 12 hours with ANC off. This drops to 5 hours for calls with ANC, on, 5.5 hours with ANC off.
The AirPods Pro 3 can last for up to 8 hours of listening time with ANC enabled, or 7.5 hours with Spatial Audio and Head Tracking enabled, putting it in the same ballpark as the Sony's.

AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony XM6 earbuds: AirPods Pro 3 have MagSafe magnets in the case
For the accompanying case, the MagSafe Charging Case recharges using MagSafe, hence the name, as well as USB-C. It can extend the total listening time of the AirPods to 24 hours with ANC enabled, and can provide the earbuds with an hour of listening time after a five-minute charge.

AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony XM6 earbuds: The XM6 need to be placed flat on a charger or charged with USB-C
The Sony charging case has both USB-C and Qi wireless charging. It can extend the battery life to 24 hours, and has a quick-charge capability to provide an hour of usage after being sat in the case for about three minutes.
AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony WF-1000XM6 - Other Features
Both have sweat and water protection, with Sony including an IPX4 rating and AirPods Pro 3 an IP57 rating. That gives the AirPods Pro 3 an edge as they are protected against dust ingress, as well as being submerged under water.
AirPods Pro 3 have heart rate sensing capabilities, thanks to its inclusion of photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors that measure blood flow using infrared light. This is fed into the Apple Health app, allowing you to use them to check your heart rate through workouts without necessarily needing the Apple Watch.
In a similar health vein, there's Hearing Test to check your ability to hear in the first place. The AirPods Pro 3 can also act as clinical-grade hearing aids, including an automatic Conversation Boost feature to improve voice clarity.
Then there's Live Translation, a feature that can automatically translate the speech of one person from another language to your preferred one.

AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony XM6 earbuds: Tracking is a fantastic feature on the AirPods Pro 3
If you've lost your AirPods Pro 3, there's also a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip in the case, to help you track them down using Find My.
Both models have the capability to automatically pause and play music with ear detection. When pulled out of the ear, both earbud types stop music playback until you put them back in.
AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony WF-1000XM6 - An AirPods Pro for non-Apple hardware
Looking at the specifications list, there's a lot of crossover between Apple and Sony's personal audio flagships. There are similar noises from each about audio quality, comparative ANC and Transparency features, and even gesture controls.
However, from an Apple user's perspective, Sony's not doing quite enough to dislodge the AirPods Pro 3 as the earbuds of choice, here.
[Image: Small white Sony WF-1000XM4 earbud package standing on a gray surface, purple background lighting, with a visible earbud illustration and warning label at the bottom]
AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony XM6 earbuds: The XM6 win for audio quality and ANC, but have less features and a steep price tag
There is the element of integration that it simply cannot match. You have no choice but to use Sony's app to properly tweak and manage the earbuds, while AirPods benefit from its options being included as part of iOS and Apple's other operating systems.
The heart rate tracking functionality is also a major tick in Apple's favor, as is the hearing aid feature for some users.
The XM6 do a lot, but the AirPods have these inherent advantages.
That said, if you didn't want white earbuds, Sony's your choice here, as you can get them in Platinum Silver or Black.
Then there's price to consider.
The AirPods Pro 3 cost $249. Sony's XM6 earbuds are sold for $329, a considerable amount more for what you get.
At $80 cheaper and with more features, the AirPods Pro 3 are the better choice for end users. Especially if they are already invested in the Apple ecosystem.
