Code fragments found in the latest iOS 24.6 beta are being taken by some to mean that there will soon be two new models of the Studio Display, with one adding more ports and better speakers.
Back in 2022 when the Apple Studio Display was first launched, it was seen as very good but very expensive. The monitor has not been updated since, but from practically the moment it was launched, there have been rumors of better versions to come.
Now according to Macworld, references in the code of the iOS 26 developer betas appear to be proof an update is finally coming. The references are to models with code names J427 and J527, which is a strong sign that there will be two versions of the display.
This ties in with previous reports that code references indicate a Studio Display with a 120Hz ProMotion screen. That's been rumored before. On the other hand, there are other reports say it will remain at 90Hz.
Code in the latest iOS and macOS betas reportedly also indicates that the two displays will have different audio drivers. There is no further information, but one unfounded presumption is that this means one display will have better audio than the other.
Similarly, J527 includes more input/output controllers than the J427 model. So it's possible to presume that, again, one model will have more ports than the other.
This is all quite possible, but after that the report moves into complete speculation. It's claimed that the code infers how one model will chiefly retain the same features of the current one, including a Thunderbolt 3 port, and the second will be a premium product with Thunderbolt 5.
More, it's extrapolated that this premium model will have a larger screen. The J427 display would in theory stay as a 27-inch one, while the J527 would be a 32-inch model.
If you paid for a Studio Display in 2022, it felt pretty premium to your bank account. But even then, there were conflicting claims that Apple was imminently going to launch a Studio Display Pro โ or wasn't.
More recently, there has been a rising number of claims that a new Studio Display is once more imminent. Some are rumors just predicting a Spring 2026 release, but then one report is a confirmed regulatory filing in China.
It's unlikely that Apple would release a new Studio Display without Thunderbolt 5. There have perhaps been more rumors of a 90Hz display than there have of a 120Hz one.
But all of this is possible. As is the idea โ quite possibly just wishful thinking โ that the new Studio Display will be among Apple's March releases.
