'Muppet*Vision 3D' may have closed, but it's being kept alive in VR
"The Muppet Show" rebirth has brought Jim Henson's creations back into the spotlight, and fans are awaiting news of the virtual return of the fan-favorite "Muppet*Vision 3D" via Apple Vision Pro.
Jim Henson was responsible for a lot of the world's most popular entertainment, and even Apple has some in their studio. We're not here to talk about Fraggle Rock, but instead, a green guy and his friends that are a little more popular.
It's a great time to be a Muppets fan, as Seth Rogen's new special seems to have successfully revived the brand. Long-time fans recently packed the theater for the first time in forever, and mourned the loss of the popular MuppetVision 3D* attraction at Hollywood Studios in Orlando.
There's some good news, though.
Before the MuppetVision 3D* attraction was closed, work was done to preserve the experience. Jim Henson's son Brian Henson has confirmed that we can expect something to arrive on VR headsets and Apple Vision Pro, but that's about all we know.
A report from TheWrap summed up what has been shared publicly since June 2025.
A little Muppets background
At about the same time that Disney acquired Henson Associates in 1989. At the time of the acquisition announcement, Disney announced that it had started work on a show for its array of parks.

A pre-recorded segment of Sam the Eagle was shown in the pre-show
The attraction opened as Jim Henson's Muppet*Vision 3D on May 16, 1991, in Disney-MGM Studios, now called Hollywood Studios. A second installation opened in Disney California Adventure on February 8, 2001, and closed about 13 years later.
The experience wasn't a conventional ride. It combined animatronics, a live performer in a Sweetums costume, and a 3D presentation. The interior of the experience was a mock-up of the Muppet Theater as popularized in the original Muppet Show.
Other physical effects were in the show, such as bubbles falling from the ceiling, LED light effects simulating fireworks, and a spritz of water shot at individual guests of the show.
Muppet*Vision 3D in Hollywood Studios closed on June 8, 2025. The Muppet Courtyard will be replaced by a Monsters, Inc. area and roller coaster.
At the time of the closure, Disney said that there were discussions and "creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future."
Prior to the announcement of the closure in Orlando, the show was not well-attended. It was adjacent to the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge area, which since opening in 2019 has drawn significant traffic.
We've heard whispers since the closure that the show was recorded in 3D for Apple Vision Pro in its last days, following a refurbishment in 2023 to bring the experience back to its full glory. Henson's comments over the past year have confirmed what we've heard.
Prior to the show, there was an extensive pre-show, mostly to house park guests and stage them for entry into the theater. Many of the Muppets in the MuppetVision 3D* show were featured in that as well, such as Sam the Eagle, Scooter, Gonzo, Bean Bunny, assorted penguins, construction workers, and so forth.
It's not clear if the pre-show was recorded, but archival recordings are 2D and should be able to be incorporated.
Still no known release window
Disney has confirmed that it worked to preserve MuppetVision 3D*, but that's about it. Henson's comments around the project provide color about the nature of the preservation, but no other details are available.

An immersive environment for Apple Vision Pro is possible
The success of the recent The Muppet Show special has brought all of this news back to the forefront, but no new details have surfaced. Expect there to be some kind of app or Disney+ experience in Apple Vision Pro โ perhaps even an immersive environment.
Disney isn't leaving out other VR headsets, so perhaps it is a 3D capture of the performance, as Henson suggested. Commentary by Henson said that you'll be able to watch the show from any seat in the theater.
One of the authors of this piece has seen the show several times. It's a stretch to say that the show is fine no matter where you sit. Regardless, after seeing 2D video ride-throughs of popular rides on Disney+, this is an obvious and welcome fit for VR.
We suspect a Muppet Show immersive environment of the theater would be the least Disney could do, and we're surprised that there wasn't one released alongside the reboot of the show. Stay tuned for more information once it becomes available.
